It might seem silly to start getting your furnace ready for winter in August. Here at Major, we think it’s important that you have time to get it tuned, tested, and serviced before winter. After all, the cooler months will be here before you know it and you do not want to wait until that first and sudden October freeze to learn your furnace is not working. Go ahead and grab your owner’s manual and get started with these tips.
Change the filter
The first thing you’ll want to take care of is your filter. Changing the filter at least once each season (or more often if necessary) will ensure that your furnace is performing at its best all season long. If you’re not sure your filter needs changing, just take a flashlight and shine it through the back. If you can’t see the light through all the grime, replace that filter!
Clean vents and ducts
Use the extension hose on your vacuum to clean the vents and ducts in your furnace. The last thing you want in the winter is for the hot air coming out of the furnace to be dirty and dusty. It won’t take too long and it’ll save everyone from having an allergy attack in the dead of winter. Once you’re finished cleaning the vents, make sure to keep them open and unobstructed too.
Check the burners
Take a quick look to see if the burners are free of debris or rust. Just like the vents and ducts, any debris on the burners will start circulating in your house as soon as you start up the furnace. Cleaning the burners will not only help keep the air clean, but also the furnace running smoothly.
Call an expert
It’s always a good idea to take the proper steps to prepare your furnace for the winter, but there are some things that a professional can do that you might not be able to. They’ll be able to clean all the little nooks and crannies so your furnace has a long life. They can also run tests to see if there are any hidden leaks. Schedule an appointment earlier than later and save yourself the stress, time, and money.
