Many of these tips you can do with just a little DIY know-how and really do not take that long to do, but they will go a long way in saving energy on air conditioning.air conditioner energy savings infographic

Lower your Energy Bill by 15%

We say it all the time. Change your filters. Doing so monthly can lower your energy consumption by up to 15 percent. After all, clogged filters inhibit air flow and make your air conditioner work harder and longer to deliver cool air throughout your home. So, your air conditioner will thank you if you simply change the filters. In fact, for most systems, changing the filters takes less than a minute or two.

Got 15 Minutes? Clean your Vents

If you have 15 minutes, you can clean a vent or two without having to call those expensive duct cleaning companies. Simply use the crevice extension on your vacuum hose to clean between the vent slats. Then, remove the vent and wash it with dish soap. Lastly, using a cobweb duster, or something similar, get down as far as possible into the vent opening itself and clear out the dust. Doing this will help open up additional air flow to the vent, again, so your air conditioner will not have to work as hard to deliver the cool air where you need it.

Clean the Condenser Coils and Save 30%

Keeping your condenser coils clean can save you 30 percent on your energy consumption. To access the coils, just open the access panel on your outdoor unit. Remove any grass or leaves that may be trapped inside your unit. Then, spray the coils with a mild detergent or a cleaning solution designed for the coils. Let it sit for about 10 minutes and then gently rinse with your hose. You do want to rinse gently to avoid bending the fins.

Clear Plants Away From the Air Conditioner

For some unknown reason, plants and weeds like to grow near air conditioner units. Do clear out plants from the AC as they block air flow into the air conditioning unit. And, if you can manage to shade your AC unit, you can save about 10 percent on electricity.
